  1. John Burke, PhD

This Mahler recording is organically “big”, just like a real orchestra is big and broad. But what is additionally noteworthy is the concreteness of individual and massed horns. Each is individually sounded, also cymbals and other percussion vigorously resound and sound throughout the performance. The orchestral presentation is vigorous, strong and vital. The live recording intuitively seems to know an audience is listening and caring about each musical phrase and measure. Once again, Yarlung’s recording is highly exemplary for meaning and sound. Well done!

  2. Steven Schultz

My first thoughts were “fresh”, “refreshing”. The musicians are new to this work and hadn’t played it before to the point of being a warhorse. One marvels at the musicians’ ability and wonder what they will sound like in the future. Next thought was “wow, there is real directionality” – real left/center/right! SO many recordings are mic’d / mix’d down to a spread out point source. Wonderful. Third – Gerard Schwartz deserves credit for keeping the timing taut, without being rushed only 64 minutes were needed as compared to Ivan Fischer / Budapest needing almost 75 (it’s obvious where too much time was spent). All in all a fantastic recording.

Dear Steven, Glad you liked the “mix,” which of course wasn’t a mix but came just from the mic set up. We do our best and keep working at it! And yes, working with Jerry and this supremely talented orchestra in Ambassador Hall in Los Angeles was a treat. We so much appreciate your enthusiasm, Steven. –Bob Attiyeh
